Puppies Up North is located in the heart of Minnesota…the land of 10,000 lakes.  I often get questions “can I bring my puppy on the boat”?  Or I hear “how can I make sure puppy is safe on a boat”?  Here are some suggestions before taking the puppy on your boat, what to pack and after the fun trip…
Taking a puppy boating can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it requires careful preparation to ensure the safety and comfort of your furry friend. Here are some tips to help you successfully take your puppy on a boating adventure:

Before the Trip

1. Check Regulations: Ensure that pets are allowed on the boat and that you comply with any local regulations regarding pets on watercraft.

2. Age and Health Considerations: Make sure your puppy is old enough and healthy enough for a boating trip. Consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

3. Get a Life Jacket: Invest in a properly fitted canine life jacket. This is crucial for your puppy’s safety, especially if they are not strong swimmers or are new to water.

4. Familiarize with the Boat: Allow your puppy to explore the boat before you set out. Make sure they are comfortable with the surroundings, including the sounds and movements of the boat.

5. Prepare for Motion: Puppies can experience motion sickness. You may want to keep your first trip short and monitor your puppy for signs of nausea.

Packing Essentials

6. Life Jacket: As mentioned, a life jacket designed for dogs is essential.

7. Leash and Harness: Use a sturdy leash and a comfortable harness to keep your puppy secure on the boat.

8. Water and Bowls: Bring fresh water and portable bowls to keep your puppy hydrated.

9. Dog Food and Treats: Pack enough food for the duration of your outing, along with some treats for positive reinforcement.

10. Dog Bed or Blanket: Bring a comfortable place for your puppy to rest while on the boat.

11. Towel: A towel is handy for drying off your puppy after swimming or if they get wet.

12. Poop Bags: Be sure to bring bags for clean-up.

During the Trip

13. Introduce Gradually: Start with short trips to help your puppy get accustomed to being on the water. Gradually increase the duration of outings as they become more comfortable.

14. Keep Them Secure: Use a leash and harness to secure your puppy, especially when the boat is in motion. This will help prevent them from jumping overboard or getting injured.

15. Monitor Temperature: Ensure your puppy does not overheat. Provide shade and water, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

16. Take Breaks: Stop periodically to let your puppy stretch, relieve themselves, and drink water.

17. Supervise Around Water: Always keep a close eye on your puppy when they are near the water. Even if they are wearing a life jacket, accidents can happen.

18. Positive Reinforcement: Use treats and praise to reward your puppy for calm behavior on the boat.

After the Trip

19. Check for Injuries: After boating, check your puppy for any scratches, cuts, or signs of discomfort.

20. Rinse Off: If your puppy has been in saltwater or freshwater, rinse them off to remove any salt, mud, or debris.

21. Hydration: Ensure your puppy drinks plenty of water after the trip to stay hydrated.

22. Monitor Behavior: Keep an eye on your puppy for any signs of stress or discomfort after the outing. If they seem anxious or unwell, consult your veterinarian.

By following these tips and taking the necessary precautions, you can create a safe and enjoyable boating experience for both you and your puppy.
