The better to hear you! Tips on your puppy’s ear maintenance…
When taking your dog out for a walk or a swim…remember that the long loopy ears will hold moisture in the ears. Walking across the dew covered grass or jumping off the dock…always remember to dry your dogs ears thoroughly!
Taking care of the long, loopy ears of one of Puppies Up North puppies is easy…here are some tips to help you care for your pup’s ears effectively:
1. Brushing and check for matting
– Here at Puppies Up North, we make sure that we brush our dog ears at least a few times a week, to prevent mats and tangles. We love to use a slicker brush or a comb designed for curly or wavy hair. This will help detangle the fur without pulling on the skin. Specifically check behind the ears for any mats as a puppy’s long ears gets tangles.
2. Cleaning the Ears
-Life’s Abundance Ear Cleaning Formula: This herbal formula contains a special botanical blend that gently and safely removes dirt and debris and dissolves waxy build-up. Aloe vera soothes the sensitive skin of inner ears. With continued use, say ‘hello’ to healthy clean ears that smell terrific! Gentle enough for puppies and kittens over 12 weeks of age.
Technique:
– Soak a cotton ball or gauze pad in the cleaning solution.
– Gently wipe the outer part of the ear and the visible parts of the ear canal.
– Allow your puppy to shake their head to help remove any excess solution and debris.
4. Routine Veterinary Check-ups
When you go to your regular veterinarian check-up, your vet will help ensure that your puppy’s ears are healthy. If you notice any signs of infection (redness, odor, discharge, or excessive scratching), consult your veterinarian.
5. Trimming the Fur
When you take your puppy to a professional groomer make sure to ask for ear trimming, especially if you’re unsure how to do it safely. Regular grooming sessions can help keep the hair around the ears at a manageable length. Like us, if you prefer to do it yourself, use blunt-nosed scissors designed for pets to gently trim the excess hair in their ear canal. Be very careful not to cut the skin.
By following these easy care tips, you can help keep your puppy’s loopy ears looking great and healthy! Regular grooming and attention will not only enhance their appearance but also contribute to their overall well-being.
