When to introduce your puppy to water / lakes?

Three dogs playing in our pond with green grass, 2 white Labradors and 1 red Labrador

At Puppies Up North we have a little pond and our dogs love to go there on a daily basis!  Our mommas especially love to go to the pond when they are pregnant as the pond / water provides no gravity and it feels good.  We let them swim around and play for about and hour.  We know that they love to catch / release frogs and snails.  We sometimes get in our paddle boat and cross the pond a couple time as they swim next to us.

We make sure that our dogs are inoculated with leptospirosis because that disease is carried by deer, raccoons and squirrels which also share the pond in drinking.  Basically any dog that goes outside frequently has potential risk for contracting this disease.  Leptospirosis can be in lakes, ponds and mud puddles.

Our puppies love water and we often see them playing in our facility, in their water dish (a 15″ inch stainless dish, 2″ deep) which we believe they think that is their swimming pool!  Ha!  We also take our puppies outside in the summer to a larger pool they can play in under an awning to keep them from to much sun.

The miniature breeds that we raise are all water loving puppies, some breeds more than others…but anytime is okay to introduce them to water…ponds, lake shores, rivers…have fun!
